The teaching has multi-meanings. according to the eminent educationist Adams, teaching is a bi-polar process, its one pole is teacher and another is pupil. the teacher brings desired changes in the behaviour of the pupils by the influence of his own personality and the pupil is influenced by the following him. this process goes on between teacher and the pupil in this process, the efforts of the teacher are called teaching and the task performed by the pupils is term as learning.
like education, there are narrow and broader meaning of teaching too. in its narrow meaning, the the teaching means to impart knowledge and conselling to the pupils in the classroom. but in broader sense in teaching process, every person or an object goes on teaching one or the other thing to the pupil right from birth till death. thus, teaching is relationship with which the pupils develops his all the powers. education, according to the eminent American educationist John Dewey, it a tri-polar process:
1.teacher

2.pupil

3.society or curriculum.

in its broader meaning, the teaching process is the mutual exchange or relationship between the three components.

Definition of Teaching.


1.N.L Gage 1962 :

''it is interpersonal influence aimed at changing the behaviour potential of another person.

2.Brubacher:

''teaching is an arrangement and manipulation of a situation in which there are gaps and obstructions which an individual will seek to overcome and from which he will learn in the course of doing so.''

3.H.C Morrison 1943:

 '' teaching is an intimate contact between a more mature personality and a less mature one which is designed to further the education of later.''

4. Yoakum and Simson:

 ''teaching is the means whereby the experienced member of the group guide the immature and infant members in their adjustment of life.''

5. Edmund Amidon 1967:

''teaching is an interactive process primarily involving classroom talk which takes place between teacher and  pupil and occurs during certain definable activities. ''this definition is limited to classroom talk. it ignores other methods of teaching.

6.B.O Smith:

''teaching is a system of action to induce learning.''

7. Ryburn.

''teaching is a relationship which helps the child to develop his powers.''

Characteristics of good teaching


1. provision of desirable informations.

the human knowledge is increasing since the rise of civilization by trial and error, insight and limitation. teacher should provide desired informations to the students in a well organised form regarding this store of knowledge. it saves time and the pupils do not face any difficulty in achieving knowledge.

2.causing to learn:

 a good teachings is not merely to impart informations to tje students, but it is also to arouse self-learning in them. the teacher should explore the interests, attitudes, capacities, competencies and need of the pupils and guide them accordingly.
from this point of view, the teaching should be natural and interesting so that the pupils get motivated for self-learning. thus the good teaching is to provide assisrance in developing the pupils by motivating them for self-learning and enabling them for establishing the contact with the different subjects of the curriculum and environment themselves.


3. Efficient planning:

the pupils cannot be taught everything all the time. various stage are mean for achieving the diffrent aspects of knowledge. the pupils have different interest, attitudes, competencies, and need on the basis of individual differences. so there must be some useful planning of teaching.

4.Selective;:

since he come on this earth human being is struggling continuously. as a result of this struggle, his knowledge store is enriching day by day .. through teaching, the pupils should be told selected and useful things. disseminating the selected knowledge is good teaching.


5. Providing opportunities for activity :

the pupil remains active by nature. this activeness is based upon his basic instincts. each pupil performs desirable and undesirable activities under the influence of his instincts. the teacher should study the pupils basic instincts and direct these activities in purposeful and useful directions. it is his duty to construct environment that the pupils himself goes on acquiring the best useful experiences by doing desirable activities. thus, good teachings provide the maximum opportunities to the pupils for doing desirable activities.

6.Sympathetic:

when the pupils get involved in the emotional disturbance while struggling mentally, his mental powers cease to function smoothly. the successful teaching requires emotional stability and security. hence, good teaching is sympathetic.


7.Cooperative;

teaching does not mean forceful imposition of knowledge in the pupils brain. it is an alive and active process. desirable results can be achieved only when teaching is based on the cooperation of the teacher and the pupils. the teacher should not be instructive while the pupils acquires new knowledge. he should offer good suggestions as good teachings is based on the cooperation of both the teacher and the pupil.


8.Organisation of learning:

in his book''successful teaching''. Marshall has written that the organisation of learning means the unification of all the components of teaching. the activities of the teacher and the pupil should be unified. it should include all tasks ,teaching methods and conditions. the good teaching is the organisation of learning.

9.Democratic.

Modern age is an age of democracy. real education is that which prepares the pupils for life. teacher should democratically prepare the pupil for democracy. to achieve this objectives, teaching should be base on democratic ideals, objectives,curriculum and teaching methods. thus good teaching should be democratic.

10.Progressive.

Real education of the pupils is based upon his personal experiences. good teaching presents new knowledge keeping in view the previous experiences of the pupil. this changes and modifies the pupil behaviour attributes like initiative , self-confidence and self-reliance etc. and developed in him gradually. hence, good teaching is progressive.


11.Emotional stability.

Every pupil has inborn emotions. these powerful emotions makes efforts for their expression. if these are left uncased, the pupil will not behave properly in the society. the suppression of these emotion is harmful for the pupil. hence, the training of the emotions of the pupils is most important. good teaching created emotional stability in the pupil.


12. self adjustment;

As the pupil develops, he has to face a complicated and complex naturial and social environment. his whole life is a history struggle. he either adapts to the environment or tries to change the environment according to his own needs. good teaching helps him in adjusting in both types of environment.

to sum up good teaching imparts desired information to the pupil. he gets opportunities for self learning by keeping himself active. as the good teaching is planned, therefore, only the selected knowledge is given to the pupils by this good teaching. good teachings is sympathetic and in this, the cooperation between the teacher and the pupil is emphasized. good teaching is learning method dynamic in the democratic shade and develops emotional stability in the pupils in a natural way. the pupils get ready for adjustment in the future life in a complicated natural and social environment. being diagnostic and remedial the good teaching is a relationship between the teachers, pupils and the curriculum by which occurs an all round development of the pupil. this enriches the pupil who used his energy in the all round progress of the society after becoming a responsible high character citizen. by good teaching, both the society and the society and the individual go on progressing.
